The Evangelical Baptist Church of Malawi (EBCM) was established in 1973 under the leadership of Abusa (Pastor) Munyewe. Munyewe, as a young man, was witnessed by an itinerant evangelist. As a result of this evangelistic effort, Munyewe became a Christian and began to share the gospel in Malawi. A small group of believers was assembled, and the EBCM was born.
Today there are about 300 churches in a number of centres, mostly rural, each led by a full-time pastor or evangelist, under the oversight of the management team located at the headquarters in Liwonde. There are approximately 120 pastors and 75 evangelists who form the EBCM.
One pastor is usually responsible for more than one church, and there are often large distances between these churches. Over the past several years, we have been able to provide bicycles to all of the centre pastors and the zone pastors and we are now working to provide bicycles to the remaining pastors and evangelists to assist them in their work.
In addition, a motorcycle for the use of the management team has been purchased and arrangements for drivers’ licenses made and paid for to ensure that the management team and executive are able to visit churches in outlying areas in a more effective and time-efficient manner by using the motorbike.
The management team is a dedicated group of mature Malawian believers who work in conjunction with Bath Road Baptist Church and Emmanuel International to develop, teach and encourage the pastors and evangelists throughout the country. Bath Road became involved in the late 1990s through Pastor Jim Clemens from Canada and continues to work with the local leaders and Emmanuel International. Many individuals and churches faithfully support local leaders and church projects through the work of EBCM!
