Malawi — the warm heart of Africa. A beautiful country nestled between Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia, Malawi is home to 18 million people. The country is one-tenth the size of the province of Ontario and is one of the poorest third world countries in Africa. With an economy supported 50% from foreign investment, the people of Malawi are in large part dependent on others for their survival. Being dependent by necessity, Malawians appreciate the foreign investment and benefit significantly from it through the provision of food and education programs, health care including HIV/AIDS care, water provision, etc. Life expectancy for Malawi was recently updated (2017) and for men is now 61 years of age, with women living slightly longer, to 63 years.
Mosques are visible in many villages, along with stately Roman Catholic churches. The Jehovah’s Witnesses are located in many towns as well. Protestant denominations represented include Presbyterian, Pentecostal and Baptist.
The Malawian people are warm and friendly in the marketplace and very respectful people. Always anxious to be optimistic and convey a sense of hope, the greeting of “how are you” is routinely answered by “I am fine. And you?” Rarely will a Malawian share how they are really feeling without some additional questioning.
